The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Vanier Cup, the championship game for Canadian university football, is one of the country’s most storied sporting events for more than a half-century. This year marks the return of this great game to Hamilton at Tim Horton's Field on Saturday November 25th, 2017.
The first national championship game, then called the Canadian College Bowl, was won by the University of Toronto over the University of Alberta on Nov. 20, 1965. Two years later, a playoff system was instituted by the governing body for Canadian university sport and the game was renamed the CIAU National Football Championship. The title contest became the Vanier Cup in 1982, named in honour of Canada’s first Governor General, Georges Vanier.
The University of Laval leads all Canadian universities with nine Vanier Cup championships, including the Rouge et Or’s 31-26 triumph over the University of Calgary in 2016 at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton. The Western University Mustangs have appeared in a U SPORTS-high 12 Vanier Cup games.
