The Ontario Provincial Football League, after reviewing the Province of Ontario Health Statements and Guidelines, those of the municipalities represented throughout the province, and the Club representatives has made the difficult decision to cancel activities related to the operation of a 2020 spring/summer football program.

The difficult decision was in keeping with one of the founding principles of the OPFL: The Player – To act on the best interests of what is best for the player. The player will be at the forefront of all league actions.

There is much uncertainty during this time.  The health crisis is affecting areas of the province with varying degrees of impact.  It is vitally important we respect and honour the health and well being of all our participants, from the player, the coach, the support staff, and the families themselves.

We applaud many of the initiatives clubs and coaches have taken over the past weeks.  We have seen and heard of the online meetings, of staff providing reaching out with on-line clinics, players getting together on-line to work out and the providing of peer-to-peer support.  The OPFL participated in a Xbox/PlayStation virtual Madden Football tournament with over 230 participants brought together throughout our Provincial clubs in early May.

All together the interest in the sport is alive thanks to all the clubs and support staff throughout Ontario doing what they do best, helping our youth to develop skills for success both on the field of play and off the field for life preparations.
The OPFL Executive will continue to explore any opportunities to keep our football community on the field. We will monitor the ongoing crisis and in the event of changes will reconvene with our memberships to explore options.

On behalf of the OPFL Executive Council we wish each of you, and your families the best during this battle.  We all look forward to the day when we can return to competition.
Sincerely,

Terry Barkley
League President
