The Ontario Football Alliance is pleased to present the 2017 Ontario Football Vanier Cup Coaches Clinic! Hear from some of the top OUA Head Coaches in the province, including:
Coach Chris Bertoia, Waterloo Warriors
Coach Bertoia will be discussing the Waterloo Warriors offensive running attack, with particular emphasis on gap-scheme systems, adjustments, and offensive line technique. In 2017, the Waterloo Warriors ranked 2nd in the OUA, averaging 212 rushing yards per game.
At Waterloo, Coach Bertoia has earned recognition as the Dave “Tuffy” Knight OUA Coach of the Year (2017). Prior to coaching at Waterloo, Coach Bertoia was the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Western University.
Coach Michael Faulds, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks
Coach Faulds will be discussing highlighting uniquely talented athletes in an offensive system. In 2017, Kurleigh Gittens Jr. ranked 1st in the OUA in receptions (75), and yards (953), and 2nd in touchdowns (6). Against No. 2 ranked Western, he caught 18 passes for 174 yards. In this presentation, Coach Faulds provides specific strategies to highlight/feature key offensive players using motion, packaged plays, and in-game adjustments versus OUA defenses.
At Laurier, Coach Faulds has led the Golden Hawks to a Yates Cup Championship (2016), and earned recognition as the Frank Tindall Trophy recipient as the CIS Coach of the Year (2016). Prior to coaching at WLU, Coach Faulds was the offensive coordinator for the York Lions.
Coach Greg Knox, McMaster Marauders
Coach Knox will be discussing the McMaster Marauders Plus-1 Pressure Defense. In 2017, the McMaster Marauders ranked 2nd in the OUA in points allowed per game, averaging 14.4. The McMaster defensive unit also ranked 3rd in sacks (25), and 2nd in interceptions (12).
At McMaster, Coach Knox has competed in three Vanier Cups, including a remarkable championship victory in 2011. He was also a member of the 1991 Vanier Cup Champion Laurier Golden Hawks, and Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders (1992 & 1998).
Coach Warren Craney, York Lions & Team Canada
Coach Craney will be discussing defensive game-planning, strategies, and tactics from the 2016 IFAF U19 World Championships. In that tournament, Canada earned Gold by defeating the United States 24-6. However, earlier in the tournament, Canada lost to those same Americans 32-14, begging the question: what adjustments did the Canadian coaches make to turn the tables?
Defensive players under Coach Craney’s guidance have earned 4 President’s Trophies, awarded to the nation’s top defensive player, and one J.P. Metras Trophy, awarded to the top down lineman in U Sports. Prior to becoming head coach at York University, Coach Craney was the defensive coordinator at Concordia, and has a wealth of international experience.
Coach Jamie Barresi, Ottawa Gee Gee’s
Coach Barresi will be discussing quarterback technique, skills, and drills used at Ottawa U. Since arriving at Ottawa U, Coach Barresi’s quarterbacks have enjoyed remarkable successes. In 2016, Ottawa averaged 385.8 yards per game (1st in OUA). In 2015, it was 402 yards per game (1st).
According to Coach Barresi, “there are too many highlights in my career [to pick just one]. It’s just the people I’ve been able to work with – those are all the highlights”.
Prior to arriving at Ottawa U, Coach Barresi worked in varying capacities (including offensive coordinator) with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, BC Lions, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Edmonton Eskimos.
Coach Darrell Adams, Waterloo Warriors
Coach Adams will be presenting “Developing Defensive Linemen”. In this presentation, Coach Adams will address defensive line fundamentals, and critical techniques to develop well-rounded lineman who are equally strong against the run and pass.
Prior to joining the Waterloo Warriors coaching staff as defensive coordinator, Coach Adams was the defensive line coach for the Carleton Ravens. As a player, Adams earned recognition as a 3x All-Conference player at Villanova University, and played professional football for the New York Jets (2006-2007), and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2007-2010).
